The ONR-funded program involves a joint effort between the University of California, Davis and Boeing Rocketdyne Propulsion & Power (RPP) to advance the state of the art for nanophase aluminum and nickel alloys. The objectives of the program are (a) to enhance our fundamental understanding of the behavior of bulk nanostructured materials, (b) to establish the influence of composition and synthesis on performance, (c) to improve the properties of available nanophase aluminum and nickel alloys through chemistry and processing optimization, and (d) to assess additional technology applications for naval and commercial uses. A symbiotic combination of experiments and theoretical studies will be used to approach these challenges. In fact, all the participants will be involved in both experimental and numerical/modeling aspects.
