Simulation and optimal control of springboard diving jumps

Description

Previous researches have provided a clear kinematic description of the key features in springboard diving. The validity of modeling the springboard with a mass-spring system before a dive takes off has been established as well. However, the diver-board force interaction and a diver’s optimal movement coordination technique have not been completely discussed yet. Therefore, my objectives are: First, a simple mass-spring model is used to simulate diver-board interaction, and apply optimal control techniques to find out the best knee joint torque patterns that results in maximum jump height. Second, a more realistic multi-link model will be used to investigate the influence of fulcrum settings/diver’s mass/strength on jump height and optimal joint torque activation pattern. Finally, I would like to use a more realistic muscular-skeletal human model and a rotational rigid bar springboard model to simulate and optimize somersaulting dives.
